Bioelectrical
Impedance Analysis (BIA)
Since 1970 there have been
over 2000 studies that have utilized the BIA. It
measures two values, electrical reactance and electrical resistance.
With
these two values, as well as height, weight and sex several parameters of body composition can
be estimated.
Your body composition is a
measurement of your body fat, and
your body cell mass, which is a measurement of all
metabolically active tissue (your muscles and organs). You never want to see your
body cell mass decrease.
Total body water tells us the
amount of water presently in your body. This will let
us know if you are well hydrated or not. You should
replace your total body water every ten days. Your
total body water is then evaluated as intracellular and
extracellular water. These values tell us your cellular
water balance. The more water you have inside your
cells the healthier you are. The first sign of decrease
health is a shift of intracellular water to
extracellular water.
Your basal metabolic rate will
also be calculated. This is the amount of calories you
burn per day to sustain life, or your metabolism.
The phase angle was the best
measurement for prognosis of survival for people with
HIV, cancer, liver disease, and kidney failure.
The higher the phase angle the better the survival rate.
This is an accurate
measurement of your resiliency or your cell health. This allows us to
monitor the progress of your treatment.
